When is the Best Time to Visit?
There is no “wrong time” to visit Napa and Sonoma, as the climate is as mild as it is unique. A typical day in December rarely drops below 55°F! If your goal is to avoid high prices and big crowds, the best time to visit is in the winter (January-March). The valley is beautifully green during this time of year, when vineyards are blanketed in vibrant yellow mustard flowers. It’s also “Cabernet Season” as new Cabernets are released.
Crowds pick up a bit in spring, but hotel prices are still affordable in April and early May, and the parks and hiking trails are ready to be enjoyed. Music lovers young and old flock to Napa in late May for BottleRock—a massive music, wine, and food festival that brings in major headliners. Be sure to book accommodation well in advance if you plan to attend the festival!
Fun Fact: The name “Napa” is believed to come from the Wappo Native American dialect, meaning “plenty” or “homeland.”
Compared with Sonoma, Napa Valley is quite posh, known around the world for its famous wineries and VIP experiences. Sonoma wineries are a little more laid-back, typically with cheaper tasting fees. But don’t worry, you don’t have to choose between the two! Their proximity makes it easy to explore both areas in one trip.
Downtown Napa and the Best Wine Country Hotels for Every Budget

There’s no shortage of luxury accommodation in Napa, but if you’re on a budget, you can find some great mid-range hotels and budget options a little outside the city.
